1921
It all starts here. The Minnesota Cooperative Creameries Association forms, and John Brandt is elected to the board of directors. He’ll go on to become our first president.
1924
In need of a catchy brand for the co-op’s sweet cream butter, the Minnesota Cooperative Creameries Association hosts a contest with $500 in gold offered as the prize. Ida Foss and George Swift each walk away a winner for submitting the name, you guessed it, Land O’Lakes. And the runners up? Maid O’ the West and Tommy Tucker.
1930
During the Great Depression, butter prices sink to an all-time low. We help shore up the weakening market, buying a whopping 7 million pounds of butter. Within four months, prices edged back up.
1937
Our first milk-drying plant opens in Luck, Wisconsin. The facility manufactures skim milk powders, casein and buttermilk powder. Due to World War II, all of these products see an increased demand. By peak war years, we had another 21 milk-drying plants operating in the Upper Midwest.
1945
By the end of World War II, we are the world’s largest producer of dry milk products—with 22 plants shipping 119 million pounds of dried milk.
1951
Our invention of calf milk replacer revolutionizes the feed business. Farmers no longer have to give skim milk to their dairy calves.
1960
We enter the cheese market in a big way with our acquisition of the Wisconsin-based Dairy Belt Cheese and Butter Company.
1970
A merger with Farmers Regional Cooperative (Felco) kicks off the beginning of tremendous growth in ag services. We’d long been focused on producing dairy products, while Felco specialized in agricultural inputs, or farm supplies.
1980
Our international development journey begins. It will become an independent nonprofit named Land O’Lakes Venture37, but you’ll have to fast forward a few years for that.
1996
The Land O’Lakes Foundation is established. Land O’Lakes, Inc. gives 2% of pre-tax profits to the Land O’Lakes Foundation each year to alleviate hunger, support education and build up the communities where our members and employees live and work.
1997
Atlantic Dairy Cooperative merges with Land O’Lakes, Inc. This is the first time that direct dairy producers are brought in from the East. We also acquire the Alpine Lace brand.
1998
A merger with Dairyman’s Cooperative Creamery Association of Tulare, California, bolsters our West Coast operations.
2001
The Purina brand becomes part of our story through a strategic brand license with Nestle Purina Petcare. We proudly carry on the the brand’s more than 120-year-old tradition of providing high-quality animal nutrition to U.S. farm animals.
2001
Our seed business joins with Agriliance’s crop protection products to form Winfield Solutions, LLC. The WinField® brand is later introduced in 2012.
2010
The Foundation’s First Run Program makes its first truckload donation of dairy products to food banks to help alleviate hunger in local communities. In the first year alone, our donations total more than 420,000 pounds of dairy product, plus 1 million eggs and 182,000 cups of cheddar cheese sauce, to 14 food banks in 11 states.
2011
We launch the R7® Tool, combining powerful data from maps, satellites and Answer Plot® locations to provide actionable field-tested insights to optimize ROI potential.
2012
Land O’Lakes, Inc. acquires Kozy Shack Enterprises, adding pudding and other refrigerated desserts to the Dairy Foods portfolio.
2014
A major renovation is completed at the Purina Animal Nutrition Center, expanding capabilities and opening new frontiers for research and development. Improvements and upgrades showcase the commitment to innovation and discovery for producers wanting to improve their operations. The updates also help to train and equip our dealers, cooperatives and sales force for success.
2016
After our crop inputs and insights business merges with United Suppliers, Inc., the WinField® United brand launches. The business serves more than 1,300 locally owned and operated agricultural retailers with seed, crop protection products, agricultural services and agronomic insights.
2017
We complete the acquisition of Vermont Creamery, a specialty dairy producer with an impressive track record of earning national and international awards.
2018
The launch of Truterra sustainability platforms is a major step forward in our work to drive on-farm conservation solutions at scale. This first-of-its-kind interactive digital platform allows farmers, ag retailers and food companies to measure their sustainability progress in real time, farm-by-farm and acre-by-acre.
2019
Land O’Lakes International Development officially comes into its own as Land O’Lakes Venture37. With direct ties to our diversified agribusinesses, and 40 years of international development experience, this nonprofit has a unique understanding of how to drive inclusive and sustainable change through agriculture.
